Poole's Rock
Wines
Poole's
Rock Wines is a successful specialist
dynamic wine company, producing a select
range of premium wines.
The
company was initially established in 1988
by David Clarke to represent his two Broke
Fordwich estate brands - Cockfighter's
Ghost and the company flagship Poole's
Rock, whose Chardonnay is the foundation
stone of this award-winning signature
range, also featuring Poole's Rock
Semillon and Poole's Rock
Shiraz
Key to the
portfolio is the Cockfighter's Ghost range
of single varietal wines. Our philosophy
for Cockfighter's Ghost is to produce
single varietal wines from Australia's
finest wine regions, including of course,
the Hunter Valley. The white wine range
includes the Cockfighter's Ghost Semillon,
Chardonnay, Unwooded Chardonnay and
Verdelho, all from the Hunter Valley and a
Riesling from South Australia's Clare
Valley. The portfolio's red wines are from
South Australia - a Langhorne Creek
Cabernet Sauvignon, Limestone Coast Merlot
and a McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Cockfighter's
Ghost white wines are all bottled with
Stelvin screwcap closures, technology that
reinforces proprietor David Clarke's
uncompromising commitment to
quality.
A
Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon under the
Cockfighter's Ghost Premium Reserve White
Label and Tasmanian Pinot Noir completes
the brand portfolio.
In
February 2002, Poole's Rock Wines
purchased the Tulloch winery in Pokolbin
from Southcorp Wines, at the same
announcing the appointment of winemaker
Patrick Auld. Relaunched as Poole's Rock
Winery, this facility now incorporates a
Cellar Door where visitors are always
welcome. ROCK Restaurant and Firestick
Café opened on this site in
2006.
A South
Australian, value varietal brand -
Firestick, joined the Poole's Rock Wines
portfolio in July 2002, and features a
Shiraz Cabernet red wine blend, a lightly
oaked Chardonnay and a
Rosé.
The
Poole's Rock Wines portfolio is available
nationally and in over ten countries
around the world including the USA, UK,
Canada, New Zealand, Germany, and Sweden
and throughout Asia and the
Pacific.

Poole's
Rock Vineyard was founded in 1988 in the
Broke Fordwich district of the Hunter
Valley by businessman David
Clarke.
Located
thirty kilometres west of the main Hunter
vineyard region, the original 32 hectare
property is named after the monolith on
its southern boundary, which in turn takes
its name from a prominent local character
who lived in the area over 100 years
ago.
Four prime
hectares were planted solely to chardonnay
vines, an endeavour described by legendary
Australian winemaker, Murray Tyrrell, as
'the viticultural showpiece of the Hunter
Valley.'
David
Clarke spent two years in search of this
ideal site, one that would provide a
suitable micro-climate and alluvial soils
conducive to the production of premium
chardonnay. He engaged viticultural
consultant Di Davidson to assist with the
vineyard's design, and the development and
planting commenced in spring
1988.
The first
vintage was released in 1990, with
subsequent high quality releases securing
Poole's Rock Chardonnay's outstanding
reputation.
'We took
meticulous care in establishing the
vineyard, which is fully irrigated and the
effort is reaping ongoing tangible
benefits, 'explains David Clarke. 'The
vines are now seventeen years old and are
producing remarkable quality
fruit.'
