Petersons
Wines
Ian
Peterson, a pharmacist, his wife Shirley
and son Colin purchased an old dairy farm
known as Glenesk at Mount View in 1964,
with the intention of raising beef cattle.
In 1971
ten acres of Semillon were planted to
supply McWilliam's winery. This was to be
the commencement of a very successful
vineyard on the rich soils of Mount View
in the Lower Hunter Valley.
In 1980
thirty acres of vines had been planted,
consisting of Semillon, Chardonnay,
Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
In 1981
the decision was made to produce two
wines, Chardonnay & Shiraz (Hermitage
back then!) which were in a very small new
winery. The first release of wines also
brought their first medals.
The
vineyard has since been planted out to 40
acres with new plantings of Chardonnay,
Verdelho, Pinot Noir, and Viognier. The
cellar door sales area was opened in
October 1981.
Since this
time we have established Vineyards in the
Premium Grape Growing Region of Mudgee and
are pioneering a cool climate vineyard at
Armidale in the New England Region.
In 2001 at
the Australian Small Winemakers Show we
were awarded the Australian Champion Small
Winery. This was topped with Jane Donat,
previously our apprentice winemaker
winning the Wine Society Members' Choice
Trophy in the 2005 Australian Young
Winemaker of the Year Competition.
HUNTER
VALLEY
The
original planting of ten acres of Semillon
was planted at Mount View in 1971 with the
intention of supplying the nearby
McWilliams Mount Pleasant Winery with
grapes.
Over the
next few years this was expanded to fourty
acres and included a variety of other
grapes: Chardonnay; Viognier; Verdelho,
Gewurtztraminer, Back Block Shiraz and
Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir.
MUDGEE
This
vineyard of 100 acres is planted to
various red varieties: Shiraz, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Durif, Zinfandel,
Malbec, Petit Verdot and Chambourcin. This
vineyard boasts some of our more famous
red styles such as Glenesk, Ian's
Selection, Old Block and Block One.
Our whites
also do well in Mudgee: Semillon,
Chardonnay, Verdelho, Viognier and we now
have Marsanne. We are even thinking of
some Sauvignon Blanc plantings for the
future!
