Molly
Morgan
Molly
Morgan, whilst not a vigneron herself,
operated in the industry as a retailer at
Greta near the Molly Morgan Ridge vineyard
site around 1822. The vineyard site along
with most of the now CBD of nearby
Maitland was originally owned by Molly
Morgan.
The land
then was pastoral and remained so until
planting to vineyard in 1963.
Vines on
the vineyard have a general East-West
alignment to capture every ray of gentle
sunlight and each variety planted to its'
most favoured soil type. Soil on the
vineyard varies from the sandy clay of the
Old Vines Semillon, to a heavier clay on
Joe's Block. The House Blocks of Shiraz
and Chardonnay enjoy a better sandy loam
base while the Shiraz behind the house is
more of stony clay.
With the
grapes achieving flavour ripeness early,
the need to pursue higher alcohol levels
has not been necessary.
Most wines
from our vineyard are lower in alcohol and
very well balanced - the key ingredients
for wines that will reward time spent in
the cellar. Such is the balance of
flavours, Molly Morgan wines give
satisfaction at any stage of their
potentially long life.
With a
life full of tragedy, romance and
adventure, the Molly Morgan story is truly
one of a legendary Hunter Valley
pioneer.
Surviving
the notorious Second Fleet deportation in
1790, she escaped back to England - as the
Captain's Mistress - only to be
transported back to Australia after
setting fire to the house of the man she
had married bigamously.
A most
resourceful woman, Molly eventually
settled in the Hunter Valley, and
persuaded Governor Macquarie to grant her
159 acres (which today is most of
Maitland's business district); established
the first School House, local church and
hospital; and exercised considerable
influence on behalf of down-trodden
convicts. Respected across the spectrum of
society, she became known as "Queen of the
Hunter Valley".
At 60 she
married again, to a 31 year old man (Joe,
the mariner, Hunt), and acquired more
land, which included the area now known as
Molly Morgan Ridge - the site of the
vineyard bearing her name.
Outliving
all of her husbands, Molly lived to age 73
and has direct descendants living in
Australia today.
