Margan
Family
The
winemaking philosophy of our Margan brand
is to produce Hunter Valley wines with
clear varietal and regional definition. I
enjoy making traditional Hunter wines that
retain their regional heritage but also
have their own contemporary personality.
I prefer
to adopt a minimalist approach to
winemaking and to let each grape variety
speak for itself. I aim to let the quality
of the fruit shine through and not bury it
by over-processing the wine. All of our
wines are hand crafted in our Broke winery
crushing between 500 and 700 tonnes
annually, depending on vintage variations.
By maintaining our current size I control
the product from the vineyard to the
winelover, ensuring we produce wines of
consistently high quality.
Due to the
fact that most wine is consumed soon after
purchase, all Margan wines are made to be
enjoyed upon release. This is achieved by
careful vineyard management, which allows
the grapes to be picked at optimal
ripeness. In the winery the fruit is
handled with care, without over working.
Oak is used with discretion- enough to add
complexity but never to over-power the
wine. Margan wines are characterised by
being well structured and balanced but
never too tannic or oakey. This means that
the wines don't have to be cellared for a
specified time before they become
approachable. Having said that, the wines
are built to last so that they will enjoy
the benefits that bottle ageing can
bring.
