Wines
Madew
Wines is an award winning boutique winery
located at 'Westering' on the Federal
Highway, Lake George (near Collector)
about 30 minutes north of Canberra. The
150 hectare property overlooks the
spectacular Lake George and is surrounded
by the magnificent, rolling hills of the
Cullerin Escarpment
The winery
is renowned for premium cool-climate wines
such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris,
Merlot, Shiraz and Pinot Noir.
The
operation of this very successful business
involves a great deal of passion and
enthusiasm on behalf of the young,
second-generation owners David and Romilly
Madew.
Madew
Wines is situated 700m above sea level
with a north-easterly aspect, and is
located in the basin of Lake George. This
affords the winery many viticultural
advantages. Budburst occurs in mid to late
September and picking occurs around mid
April to early June. This allows long
subtle flavours to develop. Long slow
ferments and a judicious use of both new
and old style
Madew
Wines was established in 1980 by Dr David
Madew at 'Appletree Hill' Vineyard in
Queanbeyan, where the family owned an 8
acre vineyard. In 1991 David Jnr took over
the running of the winery, redesigning and
launching the 'Madew Wines' label. Madew
Wines transferred their operations to one
of the oldest vineyards in the Canberra
district, 'Westering' vineyard on the
shores of Lake George. Operations of Madew
Winery at its new premises began in 1994,
and their first vintage was produced in
1995.
